Questions people ask

Single-phase or three-phase?

If your home has single-phase supply, which most Inner West houses do, a 7 kW charger is the answer and it fills almost any EV overnight. Three-phase 22 kW only makes sense if you already have three-phase power; upgrading the supply is an Ausgrid job that costs far more than the charger. Several chargers we install, including the Tesla Wall Connector, Zappi and Wattpilot, run on either supply from the one unit, so the charger stays if your home is upgraded to three-phase later.

Will it work with my solar?

Yes. Any charger will run off your solar during the day. Solar-aware chargers like the Zappi and Wattpilot go further and track your surplus so the car only takes what the panels are producing.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Plan on the whole day. Most boards are done by mid-afternoon, but old enclosures, asbestos panels and wiring that needs sorting can run it to the evening, and the power is off for a good part of it. We tell you the day before what to expect, so charge your phone and laptop first.

Do I need to be home during the installation?

Yes, at least at the start and the end. At the start we walk the job with you and agree the charger position and the cable route. At the end we plug your car in together for its first charge and set the app up on your phone. In between, you're free to get on with your day.

Do I need Ausgrid approval?

For a standard 7 kW single-phase charger on a home with spare capacity, no approval is needed. We lodge the notification Ausgrid asks for as part of the job. If your supply needs upgrading, that becomes an Ausgrid connection application and we walk you through it. Ausgrid explains the home-charging side on its EV charging page.

Are you licensed and insured?

Both. Chief Eltech holds NSW electrical contractor licence 400214C, which is what allows us to contract directly with you rather than work under someone else, and we carry public liability insurance on every job. Ask for the certificate of currency at any point and we'll email it to you.

What warranty do I get?

The charger carries its manufacturer's warranty, typically two to three years. Our installation work is covered by the Certificate of Compliance and NSW consumer guarantees, and if anything we did plays up, we come back and fix it.

We also do

Switchboard upgrades, safety switches, LED downlights, smoke alarms, ceiling fans, powerpoints and USB outlets, data and TV points, fault finding and renovation wiring.
